Their goals
The Engelberts hoped to show their four children that there are things everyone can do to make a positive impact on the world when it comes to saving energy. Specifically, they hoped to help the environment by through energy conservation and by fixing energy leaks in their own home and reducing their energy consumption by upgrading their HVAC and appliances to more energy-efficient models. Dennis added, “We had identified many other opportunities in our house and have learned so much more from the energy audit with the help of TXU Energy.” |

Their improvements
- Replaced all light bulbs with CFLs and added LED nightlights
- Installed two (2) new ceiling fans
- Insulated their hot water heater
- Replaced dishwasher and washing machine with new ENERGY STAR® models
- Added eight (8) magnetic acrylic window panes to single pane windows
- Added solar screens and solar film to windows
- Sealed infiltration gaps (switches, attic stairs and ceiling foam plugs)
- Installed new A/C condenser and coils
- Purchased Smart Power Strips for electronics

Their story
The Engelbert family from Seabrook, Texas includes – Dennis, an equipment salesman; Tammy, a stay-at-home mom; and their four children: Gavin, 8, Grace, 6, Jaden, 4, and Faith, 2. Rounding out the family is Tabby, their cat. The Engelberts have lived in their 3,400 square foot Houston-area home for the last three years. It was built in 1994. They replaced the roof after Hurricane Ike hit. At that time they also added reflective paint and a radiant barrier. The Engelberts were very excited about the opportunity to make additional improvements to their home to achieve some real savings on their energy bills. |
